I was thinking yesterday that if I kept surfing that I could pass up my child hood surf heroes when I am around 55-60 years old

Then my friend sent me these pictures of Tom Carroll form April 9th of this year.

He was surfing at North Avalon in Australia

When he comes out of the tube he doesn't claim it. That is cool. I am sure I would claim it if I got that shacked.



So will I pass my surf heroes...................Answer

SDSU has made every party school list we’ve compiled (that’s four, by the way). Playboy U reps took their cameras to the university’s Reggae Sun Splash last year, and when they asked why SDSU is a party school, one cutie eloquently replied, “Because we rage like it’s our fng job.” Chris, a business major, informed us that SDSU’s motto is “Study hard, party harder.” Our researchers assure us the school’s actual slogan is “Minds that move the world,” but we suggest the administration adopt the former. Written in Latin, it would be harmless.

Well there it is. No, my kids will be going to UC. Party is over. Our economy doesn't lend itself to a party in school right now. But somewhere in the back of my mind I can't help it. It comes out like floating apparition......College was fun

Playboy names University of Miami top U.S. party school

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Playboy magazine on Friday named the University of Miami as the top party school in the United States based on five criteria that included a nod to brainpower.

The adult magazine, which has only occasionally published the party college list in the past but will now turn it into an annual feature, ranked the schools on campus life, sports, sex and academics, or "brains," as Playboy put it.

As a last criteria, Playboy included "bikini" which combined weather, guy-to-girl ratio and cheerleaders.

But absent from the credentials were college bars and parties that exist on the fringe of campus life.

"In order to make the list, you had to be a school where fun happens, so we threw that out and went to other criteria," said Playboy Assistant Editor Rocky Rakovic.

Rakovic also said it was hard to quantify just exactly what made a good bar scene from campus to campus, because each location had its specific attributes.

"You can't say keg party at Arizona State is much better than bar crawl at (University of) Wisconsin," he explained.

On the subject of brainpower, Rakovic said that criteria was important because, after all, "you are in college for a reason, to get an education."

Judging the intelligence of U.S. university students turned into a rather scientific equation, too, using things like grade point averages, freshman retention and Princeton academic reviews, then giving them a numerical weight and averaging results.

The one surprise, Rakovic said, could be the No. 6 school University of Wisconsin because the "bikini" ranking favored schools with warm weather climates.

Playboy began ranking party colleges 20 years ago. The full list is in the magazine's May issue and on the Internet at www.playboy.com/partyschools09.

The paradigm has shifted though. UC San Diego is the school to go to according to Surfer. Even so, SDSU requires a 3.7 GPA. Do I want my kids going to SDSU........hate to say it but do as I say not as I do.......Answer

Heat wave creats surf fever

Lack of surf and continued cold water makes it harder to take the heat. Good news I get to go to Riverside today aaaahhhhh.

At the contest this weekend the kids surfed at a level that was insane.


After hearing the above quote from the ISF State Finals this weekend, I realized there is a debarkation point from the first few rounds where the kids are having fun to the later rounds where the parents have lost their minds.

The State Championships were fun for us. Lucas made it through to the Semis and placed 9th overall. It was surreal watching him advance both days. I kept saying "if you only make it through one heat" we can have a fun weekend at our spot just surfing this weekend. But he kept advancing.


It was at Oceanside Harbor and the waves were small but clean and consistant.

Nerves ran wild on the beach.

Lucas arrived in Sacramento for the National Geography State Finals ready for action.

The California GEO BEE state finals featured 100 kids who won their school Geography Bee then scored in top .2% percent of all schools in California on the written test. It was a packed house full of parents, press and nerds of all kinds.

The group of kids from around the state. Some interesting kids. Most of them were big on the Chess Team and Math Olympics. The kids were from private schools and had been wearing out their Geography books testing themselves in preparation.

Lucas brought two surf magazines. (bit of a faux paux)

The questions were tough here they are lined up with Lucas in the hot seat. "Which African Nation has had 3 different government systems in the last five years?"

Well he tied for 20th place after missing just one answer. Pretty great! The 19 top kids had perfect scores in the first eight rounds. Lucas missed one answer. Evidently most other state winners only go to round 4-5, But we were happy to see him take out the home school kids and private Rhodes and exclusive private school guys.

'Was that 20k a year worth it Mr. Patel?' My surfer kicked your kids butt.

You will never hear surf music again

Here is my surf buddy John Severson surfing and playing guitar. I met him on a Mexico surf trip about 4 years ago. He was in his 70's and just as stoked as the rest of the guys waiting for waves. He was a cool guy and I hope to be surfing as well as him when I hit 70.




First the 'you will never here surf music again' quote is from Jimi Hendrix on Electric Lady land 'the third stone from the sun'. It has rumors of 3 interpretations:

1) Dick Dale was in hospital with cancer. He was thought to pass away soon. One theory (Dick Dale's) is it was put in the song as a tribute the the surf guitar guru.




2) The Beach Boys bailed on the Monterey Pops festival and the next theory is that it was meant that because the Beach Boys did not show up and grace the festival (according to the Beach Boys) Jimi was saying all was lost.




3) It was a slam on commercial surf music like the Beach Boys.



When I used to listen to Electic Lady land over and over, I thought the line meant it was that the good surf guitar was fading out. Not that Dick Dale was dying but that we would not here the surf bands much longer. All this brings me to Bach.

Now I am not a high brow guy but I like my Rococo music and I like chamber music (blame my parents). He was really an organist and fugue guy but he wrote a suite for Cello. There are a couple of ways to go on this.

Anyway as a good beer and hot dog low brow white trash guy this stuff is good surf music. I was in one of those music stores where you can listen with headphones to music you might buy and I listened to Yo Yo Ma



Do yourself a favor. Put on the earphones, pop in some Yo Yo on your Ipod and think of a good day surfing. Oh yes blast it loud! If you don't like this music yet this should turn a corner.

Hey I know that dude!!!

Back to the having work interfere with my surfing, I was in Vacaville today. Yes high school Spanish buffs it means 'Cow Town' and there really is a place that proudly bares the name. It is about 20 miles west of Sacramento.

I was in a new facility. They are are huge company that 'develops gene therapy medicine for serious illness' (read 'octomom').

During my tour of the facility with the operations manager, he said Dr. Important Guy might be available for a few minutes. I was OK with meeting Dr. Important Guy. I being a sales guy like to meet the important guys. This is one of those facilities where they take away your cell phone and do a check on your drivers license to make sure you are not some spy (corporate or biological.)

Anyway the operations manager who was a nice older man with real pride was showing me the new facility brought me to Dr. Important Guy. It was surreal.

Me....."Sidewinder!!!!!"

Me.....(I am now in the weird moment where the guy who surfed with you 27 years ago is now some important research guru at a huge company and I am baffled) "That's cool"

'That's cool ' is all I could come up with. The poor operations manager was about as nervous as you can get around your bosses bosses boss. I am in shock that 'Sidewinder' is not in jail or some psych facility. He was out there back when I knew him several decades ago. He would always have some trippy government conspiracy story to scare us with. We thought he was a bum and was crazy (in a good way).

When we used to surf at Davenport we met this guy who was doing a sideways bellyboarding thing. We of course named him 'Sidewinder'. We went into his palatial office and I learned the whole story. When we met him he just had suffered a back injury falling down some stairs. He was working on his PHD at UC Santa Cruz and loved the ocean and became another surf junky. His 'sidewinding' was good therapy and now he can stand up and surf. He quickly emailed me this picture of him longboarding.



This picture says it all about our sport, the true democracy of it and how powerful it stays with you. After all in most meetings you meet someone that you haven't seen in 30 years and they are gracious and all. But in surfing first things first LOOK AT THE PICTURES OF ME SURFING I CAN SURF!!!!!!!
